Removing old furniture and appliances: what should you know?

What can be removed or disassembled

Removal can be requested for wardrobes, beds, chests, cabinets, kitchen modules, sinks, mixers, traps, hobs, ovens, extractor hoods, washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters, shower systems, bathroom screens and other items.

The complexity depends on how the item is fixed, the condition of its connections, access and whether the parts need to be preserved for reassembly.

Removal does not always include carrying and disposal

Removal means disassembling or disconnecting furniture, an appliance or a sanitary item from its installed position. Carrying it to the entrance, moving it on stairs and transporting it to a waste facility are separate activities and must be agreed in advance.

If carrying is needed, mark it in the calculator and specify the floor and whether the item fits in the lift. Disposal is not considered included unless it has been explicitly agreed.

Disassembly for disposal or later reassembly

The method depends on what will happen to the furniture afterwards. If it will be reused, parts need to be removed carefully, hardware and fixings preserved and individual panels identified where possible. This normally takes longer than breaking down furniture intended for disposal.

Old furniture may have weakened materials, stripped screws, glued joints or deformed panels. It is therefore not always possible to guarantee that every component will remain suitable for reassembly.

What matters when removing a kitchen

Kitchen removal may include releasing the worktop, lower and upper cabinets, sink, mixer, trap, hob, oven, extractor hood and built-in appliances. It should be clear which elements must be preserved, which connections can be disconnected and whether the wall, backsplash or worktop must remain undamaged.

Disconnecting and making connected appliances safe.

Removing loose shelves, doors and drawers.

Separating the worktop and silicone joints where possible.

Taking down wall cabinets with a clear working area.

Disassembling carcasses according to the purpose of removal.

Removing washing machines, dishwashers and other appliances

Washing machines and dishwashers require access to power, water and drainage connections. Water can remain in hoses and filters, so the area should be accessible and prepared. A built-in appliance may also be fixed to a cabinet or worktop.

For hobs, ovens, extractor hoods and water heaters, the power supply and fixing method must be clarified in advance. Work on permanent electrical, gas or other specialist installations may require a qualified professional and should not automatically be treated as part of ordinary removal.

Removing sinks, mixers, traps and sanitary items

Before removing a plumbing item, the water must be shut off using a working isolation valve. Connections, seals and fixings are checked. Heavily corroded parts, seized valves or old pipes can increase the work and require further clarification.

Openings, silicone, fixings or marks may remain on the wall, worktop and tiles after removal. Surface repair and installation of a replacement item are separate activities unless explicitly included in the request.
