When should furniture be fixed to the wall?
A practical guide to securing wardrobes, wall units, tall cabinets and suspended furniture based on their construction and wall type.
When wall fixing is especially important
Wall fixing improves stability and reduces the risk of furniture tipping or falling. It is especially important for tall and narrow items, wardrobes, bookcases, wall units, children's furniture and units that the manufacturer specifically requires to be secured.
The weight of the furniture alone should not be relied upon. Open doors and drawers, an uneven floor or weight placed high up can change its balance.

The wall type matters
Concrete, brick, aerated concrete and plasterboard require different fixings and working methods. Before drilling, it is also important to consider possible electrical cables, water pipes or other hidden services in the area.
If you know the wall type, mention it in advance. A photo of the area and the fixings supplied with the furniture helps us prepare the right materials and tools. If the wall has internal or external insulation, the fixing method must be discussed and agreed with the property owner in advance.
How to assess whether furniture needs securing
The manufacturer instructions are the first reference. If wall fixing is specified, it is part of the correct installation. Height, depth, base size, weight distribution, opening method and final position should also be considered.
A tall wardrobe on an uneven floor, a narrow shoe cabinet or a wall unit loaded at the top may need additional stabilization. When the situation is unclear, the decision should follow an inspection of the furniture, wall and site conditions.
What is checked before drilling
If the drilling point is close to a socket, switch, water connection or a likely service route, this must be mentioned in advance. Unclear conditions may require an additional check or a change of position.
The final furniture position and whether it can be leveled.
The wall material, thickness and condition.
Cavities, wall coverings, tiles or insulation layers.
Possible routes of electrical cables, water pipes and heating pipes.
The expected weight and load after the furniture is in use.
The fixings specified or supplied by the manufacturer.
Fixing to concrete, brick, aerated concrete and plasterboard
Concrete generally requires fixings for a dense, hard base. For solid or hollow brick, the choice depends on the masonry structure and required load. Aerated concrete is more porous and requires a suitable dedicated solution.
With plasterboard, it is important to know whether a metal or timber stud is behind the board and what load the construction can carry. Heavy suspended units should not be fixed on the assumption that any hollow-wall plug will provide adequate capacity.

The furniture is assembled, positioned and leveled in its final place.
Fixing points are selected according to the construction and instructions.
The base material is checked and a suitable fixing is selected.
Drilling points are marked and the surrounding area is assessed.
The item is secured without deforming its carcass, back or mechanisms.
Stability, doors, drawers and leveling are checked at the end.
What affects the wall-fixing price
The approximate price depends on the number of fixing points, wall type, access, furniture size and weight, required fixings and any wall covering or insulation. Securing one tall cabinet and mounting several kitchen wall units are not the same amount of work.
